We’re the training side of the historic Planet Ant Theatre. We offer professional arts education taught by the best, most unique and creative teachers from the local and national stage.

Planet Ant has a long history of working with the very best talent in Metro Detroit.

Improv

Intro 1-4 | Intermediate 1-3 | Advanced 1-3

Improv changes lives, come find out why! Our talented instructors get your group laughing while seamlessly integrating lessons that will have you seeing the world in a new way. Levels intro 3 and above perform at the student showcase.

Film

Levels 1-5

Make that short film that’s been in your head. Instruction on visual writing, editing, shooting, running sound, lighting, and more turn your class into it’s own film production team. You’ll each end the run of classes with your own festival-ready 5 minute short.

Sketch

Levels 1-6

Learn the styles of Monty Python, Key and Peele, Mr Show, Black Lady Sketch, SNL and make comedy the way you want it. You and your team will be spending time writing your sketch show in a writers room environment that welcomes honest feedback. At the end of the class you’ll not only have a portfolio of sketches you’ve written but also a fully produced sketch show on the Ant Hall stage with a 2 week run.

Modern Playwriting

Levels 1-5

Your voice is an important part of our world. Say what you want how you want. Be a playwright and create your own one act play. This course guides the creation of a modern one act play from it’s idea to it’s final presentation.
We put on hundreds of stage shows per year at Planet Ant. Come learn from the pros how to shape your idea into something that will leave audiences floored.
Get the ideas from your imagination to happen on a stage with the help of experienced teachers and class mates. Create a script that’s suitable for submission anywhere.

TV Comedy Writing

Native Detroiter, Katie Thomas, wrote a TV show and so can you!

The class will feature an introduction to the basics of structure and content needed to write a successful half-hour comedy script, including tips on creating a successful logline, show bible, episode outline. Students will participate in short writing exercises on which they’ll receive instructor and peer feedback.

Stand Up

In this class, students will learn the fundamentals of writing and performing stand-up comedy. The goal is to develop and refine a 5-minute set, which will be showcased in a final performance. The course will focus on joke writing, delivery techniques, and stage presence, with plenty of group discussions and hands-on practice.

This course is designed for beginners, but comedians of all experience levels are welcome.
